Why I hate Toshiba

Posted on June 21st, 2005 in Unfiled by stickyc || 3 Comments

So we got this nice sexy Toshiba laptop with Windows Media Center edition and a TV Tuner and nice fat screen for our toy-junkie boss. 1 month after the warrantee expires, the drive dies. No big deal, new laptop drives are cheap and the drive’s easy to get to, we’ll just swap it out methinks.

But wait! We were not sent any recovery CDs with the laptop. Drat! No problem, call Toshiba. We’re told they’re out of stock right now, but to call back next Tuesday (harr!), they should have more in stock and will overnight them for $14. Tuesday rolls around, call Toshiba, Toshiba says they no longer make restore CD’s for our model of laptop. IT’S NOT EVEN TWO YEARS OLD! So, they say I can take it to the local service center and they’ll re-image it. No problem, the local service center’s just a mile down the road. I give ‘em a call, they say they’ll need to order restore CD’s from Toshiba to re-image the machine. Oy! So, I call back Toshiba, they tell me they’ll re-image it at thier service center for $75 and two weeks out of service (did I mention the boss is leaving town next week?). Or, they suggest I go buy a new copy of XP or XP MCE and go with that.

Needless to say, we’ll not be buying any more Toshiba product.

Citadel.org - Home

Citadel.org - Home I remember, way back in the early days of dial-up, I ran a BBS of my own called The Farce. I tried a few different bits of BBS software, usually menu driven with forums and files and messages. However, there was one radical piece of software called Citadel. Citadel organized the BBS into rooms with their own message forums and such. I’d completely forgotten about Citadel until today, when I was browsing for Open Source groupware software and BLAM! There’s Citadel! Re-invented as a groupware application. Ca-ray-zee!
