The Missing Sync version 4

Posted on June 29th, 2004 in Unfiled by stickyc || No Comment

Mark/Space, Inc. - Products PalmSource got quite a bit of flack recently with its announcement that it would no longer be updating HotSync for Mac OS-X. As expected, the 3rd parties have stepped in and done a great job - check out the upcoming feature-list for Mark/Spaces Missing Sync, a replacement HotSync Manager. Some highlights. Some of these are so cool, I may end up buying this product even though I have a working configuration already (Tungsten C):

  • Support for Palm OS 4 and 5 devices
  • Compatible with existing Mac conduits
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Network sync
  • Conduit profiles
  • SyncMinder
  • Desktop mounting of memory cards
  • iPhoto and iTunes plug-ins
  • USB and Bluetooth Internet sharing
  • Enhanced backups
I’m especially excited about wireless syncing and conduit profiles (Full Sync, Only Backup, Only Install, etc…). I’m sure more than a few iSync users are frustrated with having to do a full sync (which can take upwards of several minutes if you’ve got a lot of data, .Mac, phone, and iPod in the mix) just to install a new app.

Batch Image Processing - Home - Image Genius

With Image Genius, processing your digital pictures in bulk has never been so easy! Have you got a large number of digital images that need resizing, cropping or masking? How about adjusting the brightness, contrast or colours? Do you want to add a fancy border, drop shadow or special effect to them all? Even adding your company logo or website address to all your images is a snip! Image Genius can do it all, with its easy-to-use drag and drop interface and powerful processing actions.
$30 for a simple app like this. Then again, have you ever tried resizing a photo for the web with the base OS install of either OS-X or Win95/2k? In 95/2k, you’re pretty much stuck - you have to go download something. With iLife, it took me a LONG time to figure out how to resize images (who woulda thunk you can only resize when exporting an image).

Macworld Editors’ Notes Weblog: How AirTunes Works A bit of detail on the iTunes side of the Airport Express. I’m a little bummed they wont be available for another month or so - I’m on a road trip to Phoenix with some laptop-toting geeks and this seems like the perfect thing to share the hotel’s net connection.

Another first for Bluetooth :: blueserker :: berserk for bluetooth I’m suprised this hasn’t gotten more hype - maybe I’m just not reading the right tabloids. Cabir is a virus written for the Symbian OS that spreads via Bluetooth to other Symbian phones. U.S. mobile phone users have nothing to fear, as miserable adaption of Symbian-based phones by the major networks means that the likelyhood of either of the two U.S. owners of said devices being within Bluetooth range is rather small.

LawGeek: Scary Patent #1: Microsoft’s Human Circuit Patent Long time friend Jason (who fights the Good Fight) notes that MS won a patent for using the human body as a power/data conduit based on current transmission. No word yet on my application for “use of human body as device for visual display of information via hand gestures”. Maybe they didn’t like the picture I enclosed as a Proof Of Concept.

Tip of the day - customizing IE’s search keywords

Posted on June 23rd, 2004 in Unfiled by stickyc || No Comment

Tip of the day Okay, so maybe everyone doesn’t need to know how to directly search the MSKB from their IE address bar, but this tip does reveal something I didn’t know - that you can easily add your own custom search prefixes. I tend to use Firefox almost exclusively now, so it’s not all that helpful - but I sure wish I’d known this before.

~stevenf: Hiptop 2 Soon? It seems like every day, I read an article here or there about someone accidentally leaking an image of an un-announced product in standard corporate materials. Here’s the latest from a T-Mobile ad. This just reinforces my opinion that most marketing droids spent too many points on charisma and not enough on intelligence.

SystemRescueCd homepage

SystemRescueCd is a linux system on a bootable cdrom for repairing your system and your data after a crash. It also aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It contains a lot of system utilities (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic ones (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It aims to be very easy to use: just boot from the cdrom, and you can do everything. The kernel of the system supports most important file systems (ext2/ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), and network ones (samba and nfs).
I know I’ve blogged about the Ultimate Boot CD here in the past, this looks like an excellent alternative…
