Sick of Registering to Read the News?: Contentious Weblog
Many news Web sites now require visitors to register in order to see this content. It’s usually free, but still they request your e-mail as well as a username and password. Then you have to log in (or you’re automatically logged in by cookie) each time you visit the site.
I can understand why they do this %u2013 marketing, tracking, and all. But it annoys me. It’s an unnecessary, although minor, infringement on my privacy, I believe.
Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so. Someone (I don’t know who), has gone around to many of these registration-required sites and created phony accounts that have a common userID and password. You can log into these sites using this account information, instead of creating your own account.
Here’s how it works….
* When you're asked to log in to a news site, try the userID freethepresses. If an e-mail address is required as the userID, enter: freethepresses@example.com
* Then enter the password: freethepresses
…That should get you right in the door, without providing your personal information. (OK, yeah, sure, they may be looking at IP addresses or referring URL, but this is at least some kind of rebellion against the wanton mandatory harvesting of personal information that plagues the Internet.)

Sushi Eating HOWTO
This document provides a simple guide to eating sushi. Its target audience are non-Japanese people who enjoy sushi but aren’t familiar with the customs and traditions that make for an outstanding experience. If you enjoy sushi, or if you think you’d like to give sushi a try, this document is for you.
Because everyone should try sushi at least once in their life and worrying about what the heck you’re supposed to do shouldn’t be part of the meal.

The Sect of Homokaasu - The Gematriculator
The Gematriculator is a service that uses the infallible methods of Gematria developed by Mr. Ivan Panin to determine how good or evil a web site or a text passage is.
Basically, Gematria is searching for different patterns through the text, such as the amount of words beginning with a vowel. If the amount of these matches is divisible by a certain number, such as 7 (which is said to be God’s number), there is an incontestable argument that the Spirit of God is ever present in the text. Another important aspect in gematria are the numerical values of letters: A=1, B=2 … I=9, J=10, K=20 and so on. The Gematriculator uses Finnish alphabet, in which Y is a vowel.
Experts consider the mathematical patterns in the text of the Holy Bible as God’s watermark of authenticity. Thus, the Gematriculator provides only results that are absolutely correct.

THROW YOURSELF A PISCO PARTY!
…pisco [PEES-KO], a South American brandy-like liqueur distilled from grapes, may change all that. Not only is pisco 45% alcohol, but it’s an essential ingredient in the pisco sour, the national drink of Peru, a potent concoction that includes sugar, lime, bitters and raw egg white. It’s tart and tasty and refreshing, and like Mom always said: “Never judge a drink by the ingredients.”
In my ongoing effort to discover and share new and painful-sounding alcoholic beverages, I bring you Pisco! From the excellent Black Table site.

Treo 600 MP3/Ogg Ringtones
Posted by: nate
If you’ve got the Treo 600 — arguably the best cellphone/pda hybrid around — you may find this latest little program useful or fun: Lightwav is a program that allows you to program any old MP3 or Ogg Vorbis audio file as a ringtone, or as a replacement for any system alarm like emai or SMS notification. No more bleeps and blinks, no more bad Midi sounds — real rock and roll. Cost is just $17, which is a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of different ringtones that you arguably already own the rights to.

Tokyo Trader Vic’s makes a mean goddamned mojito
The mojitos at the Tokyo Trader Vic’s come in a ~8″ tall block of ice, bored out to make room for the drink, served with a fat-ass novelty straw (that’s a dinner-plate, shown for scale). 20,000 Yen! Link (Thanks, Howard!)

bluetooth @ MUlliNER.ORG
Bluetooth Joke of the Day (BJOD) is a small newsfeeder which works over Bluetooth/OBEX. With this you can provide a newsfeed to any Bluetooth enabled mobile/smart phone or PDA without installing any software on the devices!
It basically searches for all discoverable bluetooth devices, then checks if a specific device is known if it is and the user wants the feed it is send. If the device is not configured to get the feed it is ignored. If the device is unknown a one-time introduction is send (this can be switched off). The whole system is OPT-IN this means users need to request the feed.
The current version is a perl script, you just need a Linux box with BlueZ installed. Have fun and report success!
Ya know, the possibilities of this kind of technology are just now starting to get realized. Even though this is an opt-in system, I can see this kind of thing supplementing the uber-cool beaming kiosks you see at PacBell park or trade shows. Imagine taking a museum tour where each piece has a localized bluetooth AP that beams the piece’s info to whatever device you have handy.

Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page
Memtest86 is thorough, stand alone memory test for x86 architecture computers. BIOS based memory tests are only a quick check and often miss many of the failures that are detected by Memtest86.
I consider this pretty much a required app when building a new box. It’s uncovered bad RAM on more than one occasion.
