Not enough giggles in your life? A team of Dutch artists might have the answer to your problem: A tickle machine. A machine made from a nylon-covered pinball operated via a computer-controlled suite of servos, motors and sensors whose entire raison d’être is to tickle you — to tickle you steadily and relentlessly, with more single-minded tickle focus than even the most dedicated older brother.
Apparently, the Dutch are a little jealous of the French being ahead in the Tickler war…

macosxhints - Send SMS messages to mobile phones from iChat

With today’s release of AIM4.6b1.1131, the capability has been added to allow AIM users to send SMS messages to mobile phones. All you do is type the message you want to send as an SMS into a new IM window and change the screenname field to 16175551212. Replace 6175551212 with the phone number of the SMS-capable mobile phone. The ” 1″ is the country code, which is required; however, I don’t think AOL supports non-US numbers yet, but they do plan to.

To utilize this cool feature in iChat, simply type Shift-Command-N for a “New Chat with Person,” and enter the phone number in the above format. When you send the message, you’ll receive confirmation from AOL that it was sent. Pretty neat!

[robg adds: Indeed, and very cooly, this worked as described in testing with my Nextel/Motorola phone. Now I can send myself reminders of things to forget later directly from iChat!]

The Rumor Mill - Current Posts

One other note today… we’ve heard from a number of interesting (and we believe reliable) inside sources that Lucsafilm is currently making major new changes to the original Star Wars films - the kind of changes he began a few years ago with the theatrical “Special Edition” releases. These changes include new special effects, revised and updated shots and scenes, and new footage shot with actors Hayden Christensen (Anakin) and Ian McDiarmid (the Emperor) that would flesh out moments with their characters in the original films. For example, an aged and scarred Hayden now appears as Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi when Luke removes Vader’s helmet. Among the other changes reportedly being made are the restoration of the original “Han shoots first” moment from Star Wars and a revamped lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan and Vader. What we’ve heard meshes with what we’ve been told before, which is that Lucas has always planned to release ultimate, “Archive” editions of these films that tie in better with the new prequels. The main question in our minds now is this: will these changes be completed in time to appear on the DVD releases planned for next September, or will we have to wait until after Episode III hits theat
This does not bode well. On the bright side, you can’t replace all those blasters with walkie talkies without creating some (even more) serious plot holes.

Daily Review Online - Hayward offers public Wifi

Daily Review Online - Local & Regional News

Hayward became the only known East Bay city Thursday to offer free Wireless Fidelity, or Wi-Fi technology, in a five-block area of its downtown core.
CTAC member Joe Hilson, who has served on both state and national information technology committees for the League of Cities, said initial cost estimates for the project were between$10,000 and $15,000.

But, with some ingenuity on the part of the city’s technology services team and a discount from the Castro Valley-based Bay Air.Net Internet service provider, the project is costing just $2,000 to launch and about $1,200 annually to maintain. Wi-fi doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. $2k is pretty in-line with setting up a large consumer wireless network. Hopefully, other metropolitain areas will take note and consider implementing their own wireless networks. I wonder if the $2k includes the Pringles cans.

Tapwave Zodiac2 Review

Hey Sony, you better be watching your back, because there’s a new kid on the block and he’s come ready to play. Or maybe I should say that he’s come to go. do. and play. At least that is the motto that Tapwave has selected for their company. This Silicon Valley startup was founded in 2001, and is now the most talked about new Palm OS licensee on the planet due to their much anticipated Zodiac handheld. Sorry Sony…
A rather positive review from Judie and Julie. I’m excited to see whether this device takes off or not, the hardware sure is cool and the launch title list is impressive, if short. Can they cut it in the world of Gameboy where Nokia seems to be failing miserably? Can Tapwave convince PDA users that they should go bigger to play games? Can they convince gamers that they need to spend $200 more for a game device that holds your address book? Time will tell.

uControl

uControl

uControl is a keyboard remapper and more. Meaning, those useless keys can now be reused, remapped, or reduced. Unix hackers will be pleased to remap the caps lock key to the control key. Indeed, that was the reason uControl was originally created; however, it has since evolved into a fairly sophisticated means of not only remapping modifier keys, but providing a virtual scroll wheel for track pad users, providing real function keys for laptop users, swapping the right and left mouse button for left handed users, and even providing a one handed typing feature for those with disabilities. Note: the one handed typing feature has been removed due to possible patent infringement (details here).
I consider this a must-have for trackpad users. Coming from a Sony Vaio, I quickly learned to love thier trackpad shortcuts (moving the finger up and down on the right border scrolls up & down, moving left/right across the top is Back/Next in a browser).

Eintagsfliegen … Life is Temporary

A life where TiVo has always existed

Remember this? It was a TiVo contest in September of 2000 - three years ago now. That’s when I won my first 30-hour TiVo box. My daughter was only 3 months old when it arrived and we set it up. As far as my daughter knows, TiVo has always been around. Now that she (and our TiVo) are three years old, and there are some very interesting things I’ve been able to observe.

kuro5hin.org || Uberman’s sleep schedule

Over the past month, I’ve managed to convert my sleep cycles to something called the Uberman’s sleep schedule. The end result is that I am sleeping roughly three hours a day. How did I do it? Is it safe?
Between this and the Atkins diet, it would seem that people are no longer content with just hacking their PC’s. It’ll be interesting to look back in 10 years after there’s some hard evidence and see what the side effects of all of these behavior modifications are.

Yahoo! News - McDonald’s Decries Webster Over ‘McJob’

CHICAGO - McDonald’s says it deserves a break from the unflattering way the latest Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary depicts its job opportunities. Among some 10,000 new additions to an updated version released in June was the term “McJob,” defined as “low paying and dead-end work.”

In an open letter to Merriam-Webster, McDonald’s CEO Jim Cantalupo said the term is “an inaccurate description of restaurant employment” and “a slap in the face to the 12 million men and women” who work in the restaurant industry.

Privoxy - Home Page

Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, filtering web page content, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.
Could be a decent replacement for the no-longer-developed Proxomitron (which I still use and love). Plus, it’s cross platform.
